Thank you Berty

Thank you Berty

Thank you Berty is a movie released in December, written and directed by Tennison Cooray. Tennison Cooray himself and Bandu Samarasinghe play leading roles of the movie. Although you may think the movie would be hilarious as it is written, directed, and played leading role by the famous comedy actor, the time spent on watching the movie is a complete waste of time. The story does not have anything you can laugh at. The story is out there with no any sense of a story and editing of the movie is worse than that. I am not sure what Tennison Cooray has tried to tell us in the story.

Berty who is played by Tennison is in completely love with girl Sandakomali. The story is about winning her heart. Naughty (Bandu) is Berty’s friend who tell Berty to earn a lot of money to win the love. There is no any humor in anything they say or do. What are Dilhani Ekanayake and Ananda Wickramage doing in the movie is still a puzzle to me. Story is going here and there without any direction or flow. We have seen films with no direction or flow from Bandu and Tenny but at least those films had occasional humor. Bandu dancing as a female is something we have seen and laughed at before so no need to put in ‘Thank You Berty’ too. If there was anything, anything that can be labeled as funny, those were few lines and acts duplicated from Tennison Cooray’ stage dramas. Anyone who have watched those dramas will still have nothing to laugh.

Its with great expectations that families go to theaters with their children. Disappointing them with low quality production may harm entire trust on Sinhala Cinema. For a success of film of any stream, story must be well planned and directed. Viewership should not be taken lightly as at the end of the day, viewers decide the success of the movie. They cannot be fooled as they are watching many films, TV not only local but also from India and Western countries. They have better understanding about what they need as a story in any stream, may it be love story, comedy, action, or classic. Until the producers understand this, it is difficult to win the cinema.
